for HKTDC Design Gallery 'Love HK' campaign
Carved dragon and phoenix statues decorated the walls of Hong Kong’s banquet halls during the 1970s, symbolising the city’s economic prosperity. Though modern restaurants have phased out such lavish designs, these motifs are now resurfacing in unexpected ways—from tattoo art to wedding backdrops and avant-garde photography, reflecting younger generations’ reinterpretation of traditional symbols.
This artwork reimagines the dragon and phoenix through contemporary geometric paper sculptures, incorporating pixel-like grid patterns within the horizontal window of the Design Gallery. Retaining their auspicious meaning, while streamlining their form, the piece revives collective memories of old restaurants and explores how cultural heritage can evolve in a modern context.
