for DX design hub
Introduction
Change is transformation. Change is also adaptation. Everything continuously changes with the environment and time, evolving toward a better direction and becoming its present form.
In nature, chameleons are resilient, highly adaptable, and colourful. They can camouflage according to the shifting environment and conditions, sometimes hiding away, calm and patient; sometimes vibrant, capturing everyone’s attention, flexibly responding to various challenges posed by nature.
The diversity of Sham Shui Po is akin to nature, where the intertwining of old and new cultures created through the passage of time nurtures various possibilities and different industries. The myriad of material shops allows us designers to find the nourishment we need, like chameleons, enabling us to grow continuously, break through our limits, create different masterpieces, and achieve excellence in various fields.
The newly established DX design hub in Sham Shui Po brings together a group of designers, strengthening the connection between them and further showcasing it to the public, helping everyone understand the stories behind the design industry.
STICKYLINE and a team of creators have brought a massive geometric chameleon to the DX design hub, spanning three floors. It is not just a large site-specific sculpture for a specific area, but also a medium to introduce the stories of various designers to the public. Through 3D projection technology, it plays images of different design themes, allowing the public to appreciate the thoughts behind different creators in a more vivid way.
In the future, the team will present different themes alongside this chameleon, narrating various chapters.
Chapter Three - Tracing : Transfiguration
Sham Shui Po's busyness street life whispers stories of years gone by, etched into the very architecture of the district. From mosaic tile and terrazzo to grand arcades, these remnants of the past bear witness to the relentless pace of urban development.
The creative team explored Sham Shui Po, capturing these echoes of time through photography. 11 locations, spanning 133 years – from the venerable Guandi Temple (1891) to the sleek lines of the DX design hub (2024) – reveal the city’s evolution, much like the rings of a tree. These photographs, reimagined as abstract alcohol ink paintings, highlight the dialogue between historic red brick and modern steel, piecing together a vibrant historical montage of Sham Shui Po. Like a chameleon adapting to its surroundings, the district's history reveals itself to the careful observer.

Chapter Two - Decoding : Cityscape
This animated drawing"Decoding Sham Shui Po’s Cityscape" is an experimental display of the artist Elaine Chiu’s approach on extracting cityscapes using squares as the measuring unit of a city’s rhythm.
The process that examines a neighbourhood’s unique frequencies, palettes, and patterns and their underlying logic and culture.
Creative Team
Elaine Chiu explores communities and identities in urban environments through paintings, on-location sketching, and performances. She attained a bachelor's degree from the Art History and Sociology Department of the University of Hong Kong in 2018. She was enlisted in Forbes 30 under 30 Asia in 2023 and was selected for the 14th National Exhibition of Fine Arts, China, in 2024.
Chapter One - Attire: Adornment
What impresses most in Sham Shui Po are the numerous fabric shops and stalls, large and small. Each piece of fabric has witnessed historical changes and spans across eras, creating various fashion trends and unique cultures, serving as a source of inspiration for many fashion designers.
The local artist team, The Light Particles, through their unique visual creation methods, collects various textures, magnifies them microscopically, and abstracts and reorganises them, overlapping with the scenes of Sham Shui Po, adorning the chameleon. Within these intertwined images, how many memories can we recall that we wear upon ourselves?
Creative Team
The Light Particles was founded by Gabriel Leung and Tsi Kwan Lau in 2013. Graduated from the Glasgow School of Art (UK) and Chelsea College of Art (UK) respectively, the artist duo creates photographic, sculptural and site-specific installations. Through a multi-disciplinary practice, the duo finds inspiration from various materials that resonate with their researched location and audiences. Their works have been shown in China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the UK, and the USA. Currently they live and works in Hong Kong.
